UK: London Airports Report Healthy Growth in Pax Numbers

Heathrow And Gatwick Airports Have Record Month With 8.5 Million Passengers

Heathrow’s figure was up 4.2 per cent on January last year, at 5.74 million, while Gatwick had 2.8 million  passengers, a 12.1 per cent rise.

The figures suggest that the Brexit vote — and the subsequent fall in the pound — has not hit visits to the UK or the number of Britons flying abroad.

Heathrow’s rise was the biggest recorded in January for six years and brought the running total of passengers for the 12 months to January 2017 to almost 76 million.

The airport handled 37,125 take-offs and landings during the month.

Heathrow chief executive John  Holland-Kaye said there was also  record cargo growth in January and added: “We are getting on with our expansion programme, so we can  create the new routes that will deliver the Prime Minister’s vision of a global Britain as quickly as possible.”

Gatwick, now handling 43 million passengers a year,  reported 23 per cent  growth on long-haul routes.
